Continuing on my SharePoint oddysey, I have been exploring it more both in and out of the office. Clearly, there is something about it that appeals to me.
Out of the office, I attended a meeting of the Toronto SharePoint Users Group. A guest speaker from SoftForte spoke about optimizing a larger SharePoint installation (with very large numbers of users). It was an interesting presentation even from the perspective of learning about performance planning.
They did have their own site, but they announced in the meeting they'd lost their free hosting and were looking for a new sponsor to maintain it. Maybe the best place to keep track of them is on Twitter @tspug until the group gets their own site back.
I've also been creating SharePoint lists at work from Access databases. The problem with Access is that it doesn't distribute easily. And the problem with SharePoint is that it isn't easy for an average end user to create a view into a database.
Access 2007 allows you to publish a query or table to a SharePoint site where you have sufficient privileges. The list created on SharePoint is not dynamic, so changes in the Access database will not get pulled into the SharePoint list, but you can save your export criteria so doing it again is simple.
So, more SharePoint. Hope you found it informative.
