To create useful documentation it is important to fully understand your users or target audience. Closely related to understanding the user is a thorough understanding of the tasks they perform.

Task analysis involves analyzing what a user is required to do in terms of actions and processes to perform a task. Performing effective audience and task analysis is the key to creating technical documents that meet the needs of the users.
